Understanding SMB Growth Barriers in Emerging Markets

Grounding Global Tools in Local SMB Reality

When a global platform scales its B2B communication tools, the primary hurdle isn't tech - it’s adoption. Our client needed a foundational understanding of the specific barriers facing Small and Midsize Businesses (SMBs) in APAC and LATAM.

The challenge was to move beyond generic business metrics. To build a product that resonates, the client needs to see the world through the eyes of a local shop owner, where every digital interaction must justify its place in a high-pressure daily routine.

Testing Hypotheses through Multi-Market Dialogue

Capturing the reality of SMB operations requires a blend of individual depth and collective validation. We designed a robust qualitative framework to bridge the gap between developer assumptions and user reality:

  • Individual Deep-Dives: We conducted 32 1:1 interviews to map the granular reasoning behind why certain functionalities were embraced or rejected.
  • Collaborative Focus Groups: We followed up with 8 focus groups to pressure-test our hypotheses. Observing the interplay between owners revealed shared cultural friction points and consensus-based barriers.

Defining the Roadmap for Product Evolution

Our goal was to transform raw feedback into a strategic foundation. By managing complex remote tech setups and simultaneous interpretation across time zones, we provided the client with immediate, unvarnished access to their users.

This study identified the "key blockers" preventing feature adoption, enabling the client to make clear, evidence-based product decisions. Through Topline Reports and Video Evidence, we provided the necessary clarity to prioritize features that solve real-world business bottlenecks.

The Bottom Line

In the B2B space, a tool is only as good as the trust it builds. This project reminds us that even for global apps, the path to adoption is paved with local understanding. To serve the world’s SMBs, you must first understand the specific hurdles they jump every day to stay in business.
